Nagenahiru Volunteers – Sri Lanka offers you a unique opportunity to experience the all basic facts & practices about Buddhism while improving the conversational English skills of young Buddhist monks.
In Sri Lanka Buddhist Monks are living in traditional temples or in monastery, during your volunteering experience with Buddhist monks you will be fortunate in taking part in centuries old rituals while gaining rare and unforgettable insight into spiritual life of Buddhist monks immersing in all aspects of ancient Buddhist practices.
While teaching English to Buddhist monks you can understand Buddhist Philosophy by reading the ancient Buddhist texts and scripture translated into English which are available in temples and appreciate. During your stay in monastery you will also be able to interact with hundreds of Buddhist devotees who are visiting the monastery for religious purpose.

Volunteer Roles & Responsibilities
- The main task of this program is to improve the English conversation skills of young Buddhist monks in Sri Lanka.
- As far as possible to speak in simple English with small to mid-sized groups of young Buddhist monks to practice and improve their communication skills in English.
- Initially preparation of a Teaching Plan for the volunteer period and submitting the prepared lesson plan for recommendation and guidance of the experts through the placement organization.
- Pre – Prepare for each class focusing on the specific needs of the group.
- Co-operate with the staff of the monastery and share skills and knowledge in designing creative strategies and lesson plans to teaching English to Buddhist Monks.
- Improving basic speaking, reading and writing English as well as some basic grammar sessions.
- Facilitate the Transformational Leadership change of the young Buddhist monks and help them to know more about the outer world and satiate their thirst for knowledge.
Skills & Requirements
To join as a volunteer teaching English to Buddhist Monks at a Buddhist Monastery in Sri Lanka No specific qualifications are required.
However, your interest to understand the Sri Lankan traditional culture and language can be helpful.
Your fluency in the English language and if you are already having any qualification or experience in teaching English will be helpful but not essential. Your desire to communicate in English, learn and the ability to be flexible will be sufficient for this placement.
Age 18+
At Your Leisure Time
- Developing friend ships and mutual understanding among educated young Buddhist Devotees and youth leaders in Sri Lanka.
- Visiting close by interesting natural and cultural heritage sites with your local friends or along as you interested.
- Participate village functions and ceremonies as Internationals Friends of the village.
- Visiting religious and Cultural Heritage sites in the Island of Sri Lanka and Experience the History of Buddhism.
- Introducing and organize Educational games, painting, drawing, and other creative activities.
- As a unique facet of this placement, you will experience and participate in traditional Buddhist rituals and cooperate with the village local leaders in organizing village functions and ceremonies.
Meals, Accommodation & Local Transport
- During your volunteer period volunteers will live at the monastery or provide with home stay accommodation in a nearby host family. Wherever you are staying the experience should be one of total immersion in both Sri Lankan traditions and Buddhist culture.
- During your stay in Sri Lanka we make all arrangement to provide three delicious home cook meals for you.

Coordination and support
- A representative of Nagenahiru Volunteers will meet you at the arrival terminal of the Colombo International airport and accompany you to the Nagenahiru Home for short orientation program.
- During your volunteer period Nagenahiru will assign a coordinator to you in all volunteer placement in location in Sri Lanka who will coordinate and assist you during your volunteer period.
