Nagenahiru Volunteers

Values & Importance of
Teaching English in Sri Lanka

Overview

Right at this moment, there are many children who are in desperate need of your help. Will you answer this call?

In this program Nagenahiru Volunteers mainly concern to provide opportunities to international volunteers to improve the conversational English and reading skills of different sectors of the Sri Lankan communities who hardly need to improve their English knowledge. Mainly school children in government schools in villages, children in rural preschools, young Buddhist monks, village youth as well as young women seeking employment in Middle – East countries.

  • With the growing tourism, globalization and increase in international trade and commerce in the Island of Sri Lanka there are very attractive career opportunities for everyone with English communication skills.
  • By joining as a English teaching volunteer in Sri Lanka, you will be teaching English to educated youth living in rural villages including young graduates from Sri Lankan state universities and higher educational institutions who are searching for better employment in the government or in private sector institutions, helping them to improve their English conversational skills leaving a positive impact on their lives.
  • As a country which was ruled by British for more than four centuries English is a compulsory subject in all schools and universities. There is well developed English language curriculums and teachers attached to all schools in the island
  • Unfortunately due to the lack of opportunities for Communication in English their conversational skills are very poor especially even among educated youth of low income families coming from villages far away from urban locations.

This situation is a great barrier to educated younger generation coming from Sri Lankan villages to secure suitable employment relevant to their higher educational qualifications. As a Volunteer your main task is to improve the conversational skills of youth in Sri Lanka.
