Traditional Handicraft in Sri Lanka 

The majority of   Rural Women involved in traditional craftwork activities has great potential to support sustainable livelihoods and generate multiple benefits to society, and provide an excellent opportunity for dis-empowered people to use their existing skills to increase their level of empowerment and self-esteem. Further Growth in the craft industry will provide improved socioeconomic benefits to these women and their household’s income.

 

In Sri Lanka the Women’s Traditional Craft Production remains largely fragmented and unorganized; suffering from lack of education, low capital, and poor exposure to new technologies.

Bentota Craft Center

To preserve traditional handicraft practices from extinction, keep its rich history alive and empower rural communities, “Bentota Crafts” was established and registered with the government of Sri Lanka to empower several hundred women engage in Eco Friendly Craft making.

“Bentota Craft Center for women Empowerment “ is a dynamic program for artistic volunteers. This project “Bentota Craft” is managed by a group of talented young women belongs to under privilege segment of the society.

 

They mainly produce several patterns of Eco Friendly ornamental products for women who are ideally designed for everyday use; it’s natural and simple, but stylish and fashionable.Their creative and artistic entrepreneurial spirits have helped them create their own opportunities by creating handicrafts to sell to the overseas guest at the nearby “Bentota Tourist Resort” in Sri Lanka.

 

Many of these women are belongs to the underprivileged segment of the Sri Lanka Society with low education.

The main goal of this volunteer project will be to building self-reliance and developing   business and marketing skills of the talented group of women to overcome the marketing  barriers of their products  ensuring  their long term Socio – Economic empowerment.

Roles & Responsibilities of Volunteers

Traditionally this sector will find it very hard capture market space. But As the Bentota Craft Denotation and marketing center is located in the famous Bentota Tourist Resort in Sri Lanka there are many opportunities to overcome these barriers in future.

 

Nagenahiru Volunteers  having strong confidence that our International Volunteers will be able to  contribute much to overcome these marketing barriers by sharing their knowledge, skills and energy.

 

Some potential actions to promote marketing will be as follows. Volunteers expected to take initial steps, designing  and communication to these activates , all required expenditure will be covered by Nagenahiru Foundation Sri Lanka  for the propose actions.   

  1. Content management to develop a web site and Marketing promotion brochures & display Posters on the Craft Center to attract more tourist to the Benzoate Craft Center.
  1. Discuss with Managers of close by Tourist Hotels and brief them on the values and importance of this traditional venture.
  1. Help women to keep records of Income and Expenditure of the Craft Center and training few identified young women in marketing of their products.
  1. Improving English conversational skills of members and develop their English speaking skills to communicate with visiting tourist to the center.
  1. In this project Volunteers can directly involve to create and facilitate their livelihood chains,  skills  &  Design development,  exposure to markets through training, sharing  experience with visiting tourist and International Volunteers which can contribute and benefit to the Sri Lankan economy and to the women involved in this industry.

Skills, Qualifications and other requirements.

  • To join as a volunteer in the Craft Center you age limit be 18 years or older. No any special qualifications, skills or prior experience   are required.
  • All you need is to have an open mind, flexible attitude and   compassion to work with deprived women, with passion to love and care for them will be sufficient.
  • In addition to this, your interest and ability to improve the English conversation skills and Business skills of women will be an advantage as the target customers of the craft Center will be the Foreign Tourist spending their vacation in nearby Bentotata Tourist Resort.
